Information over work environment and tasks

Developmental disabilities nurses care for those with mental or developmental disabilities. These disabilities range from things like autism, mental retardation, down syndrome, and many more. A developmental disabilities nurse works with the patient and their family. The job of a developmental disability nurse is to help patients with feeding, encouraging their independent mobility, helping the patient with language and communication skills, and communicating with the family about the patients condition. These type of nurses can work in many different types of settings like hospitals, schools, work places, retirement homes, and even in the patients home. These nurses also often develop long term relationships with their patients.

Information over the schooling required for this job

There are a lot of school in our area alone that offer strong nursing programs. Some of those school are Clarkson, Creighton, UNMC, and UNO. I choose Clarkson College as the school to research more information on. The cost for a graduate for 1 year is $8,000 and the cost for an undergraduate for 1 year is $11,500. This school is located in Omaha Nebraska. The cost of living in this area is the same cost of living as the smaller cities like Papillion except the rent for apartments are a little cheaper. In order to become a nurse you do the BSN program which is 4 years long, and then you take the NCLEX-RN exam, and if you want to be a Developmental Disability Nurse you'd then have to spend 2 years in working with developmental disabilities and then take the Developmental Disabilities exam and then start working. I intend on paying for my education by financial aide, scholarships, myself,  and help from relatives.

Information over the skills required

In order to be good at this job you'll have to have good judgement, good listening and communication skills, have courage and commitment, show that you care, being able to put others needs above your own, and you also have to be very patient.

Information over the job financially

The employ-ability outlook on this profession is very good. It's expected to go up 19% before 2022 due to the demand for health care officials, and because of all the health problems going on in the word for example obesity is a huge problem right now. A normal Registered Nurse makes averagely makes $62,450 yearly. However the specific kind of nursing I searched for, a developmental disabilities nurse that has their RN degree can make between $50,000-60,000 and a LPN can make between $34,000-44,000.
